Fly an airline that has taken steps to reduce their impact on the environment
Why This is Green
Air travel is now the fastest growing contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Although airlines are in this energy intensive, less-than-green business, it doesn’t mean they cannot also take steps to reduce their environmental impact. And many airlines are doing just that—working on fuel efficiency and testing alternative fuels, calculating emissions, and stepping up efforts in terminals as well as in-flight to reduce waste and increase recycling. Applaud their efforts by only booking flights on airlines that have taken these green steps.
A few organizations and media outlets have attempted to rank airline sustainability initiatives. Greenopia’s consumer friendly rankings take into account fleet age, fuel consumption practices, carbon offsets, green building design, recycling programs, and even organic, local, and sustainable in-flight food options. In Greenopia’s most recent report, Virgin Airlines took top seed, while Alaska Airlines, Continental, and Delta all tied for second.

How To
Read about airline sustainability initiatives before buying a ticket. Go with the eco-friendliest airline that works for your travel needs and budget. If you have a choice of several airlines, vote with your wallet and choose the greenest one.
Connecting flights on a green airline can’t trump a non-stop flight on a less-green carrier; going non-stop is always the greener choice.
