Install natural or recycled PVC-free wallpaper
Why This is Green
Most conventional wallpaper is made from or at least coated with vinyl. Also known as polyvinyl chloride or PVC, it’s referred to in environmental circles as the “poison” plastic because from manufacture to disposal it’s highly toxic—for humans and the earth. It releases hazardous materials into the air and water. Exposure to PVC has been linked to dizziness, headaches, asthma, liver damage, brain/nervous system damage, and increased cancer risk. People who work in or live near PVC factories have it the worst. Vinyl also contains phthalates to make it flexible. These leach out of PVC products and have been linked to hormone disruption, among other health concerns. You can smell the chemicals as they waft into the air—think about how stinky new wallpaper is. Some vinyl can also contain lead and even flame retardant chemicals that are best avoided.
Also of concern: the glues used to affix wallpaper to the walls. These can contain formaldehyde, a known carcinogen.
By using a PVC-free wallpaper with a safe adhesive you can avoid bringing any of these hazardous chemicals into your home and reduce their demand, in the marketplace if only by a small amount.
