Plant containers for herbs or vegetables
Why This is Green
There’s something about picking your own tomatoes. Beyond how fun—and flavorful—homegrown produce and herbs are, choosing to grow (at least some of) your own food is a big plus for the environment. You eliminate the transportation associated with that part of your diet. Given that food in stores has traveled 1,300 miles on average, even one or two homegrown items can make a difference.
Plus, food grown at home is better for you. It is often grown organically and without the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. And it’s eaten shortly after it’s picked, which means it has the highest nutrient level.
Container gardens can be grown indoors or outdoors, making them an option even for the urbanite with limited or no outdoor space.
