Purchase or lease a hybrid
Why This is Green
Hybrid vehicles rev up your fuel economy with a combination gas and electric engine. In a hybrid, energy captured whenever you hit the brakes charges a battery, which runs an electric engine that propels you forward. When the battery is low or additional power is required (for example, when passing or going uphill), the gasoline engine automatically supplies that power while recharging the battery.
Because you get where you’re going partly on 100 percent clean electricity, you arrive having used less fuel and produced less pollution. That’s why hybrids are leading us down the road to a more sustainable future and why people who own them think they’re a gas!

How To
The Toyota Prius is the most visible hybrid around, but it’s hardly alone. Automakers from Honda to Ford offer hybrid cars and trucks. As with any new vehicle, always compare the total fuel efficiencies of the models you’re considering. Hybrids getting 40 mpg or better offer the greatest fuel cost and environmental savings.
Just remember this: Depending on where you do most of your driving, a hybrid might not be the most earth-friendly ride for you. Hybrids are ideally suited for urban settings, where stop-and-go traffic provides plenty of braking-fueled battery charging and low travel speeds permit electric-only engine operation. In rural areas with long stretches of higher-speed, brake-free cruising, hybrids can underperform on promised fuel economy. In these cases, you may be better off with clean diesel or even a high mileage standard gasoline vehicle.
