Recycle cardboard

Why This is Green

Did you know that cardboard is one of the most easy to recycle materials? There are two types: corrugated cardboard, the type used for shipping boxes, and paperboard, which is typically found in food and consumer product packaging (think cereal boxes and paper towel tubes). Cardboard is made from long fibers of cellulose that can be recycled into new cardboard, paper, and paperboard many times before they become too short to be of further use. Pretty cool.

Every ton of cardboard we recycle saves 15.7 BTUs worth of energy and prevents all the pollution that energy would create. If you don’t think in terms of BTUs, how about trees? According to the Energy Information Administration, recycling a ton of paper products can also save 17 trees, and requires about half the water normally used to create paper from wood.

How To

Cardboard is commonly collected by local curbside recycling programs and local solid waste facilities.

Keep in mind that most recyclers won’t accept wet cardboard or pizza boxes, which are coated with a grease-resistant chemical that makes recycling difficult. To find your nearest cardboard recycling resource, visit Earth911.
