Reduce leisure air travel to one trip or less per year
Why This is Green
This action isn’t for everyone; for many of us it’s not practical. That said, many of us do have a choice about how we visit family and friends, and can pick and choose where we vacation. When you decide to minimize air travel, alternatives emerge. You may wind up driving or taking a train to see relatives who live nearby, or checking out a vacation destination closer to where you live.
The environmental benefits of reducing leisure air travel are significant. They reduce both emissions and energy use. Trains can be an excellent alternative to flying. They have the potential to carry many tons of weight at considerable speed—and with fuel economies approaching hundreds of ton-miles per gallon. Driving can also drastically reduce emissions, the amounts depend on the type of car driven and the distance covered.

How To
Determine your “must” visits (grandparents, weddings) that appear to require air travel. Then figure out if not flying would work for these trips from both a money and time standpoint. If the answer is no, plane it is. Not going to a family reunion because it isn’t good for the environment isn’t a viable excuse!
Consider your vacations. Look into local destinations. Try only doing international or cross-country trips once every other year.
Alternate vacations by season—stay local for summer vacation, and use your one trip to escape to warmer weather in the winter. Convince family members who don’t live near you to join you on this trip and make it a two-fer!
