Replace unnecessary air travel to clients for office face to face meetings with phone, audio, and videoconferencing
Why This is Green
When scheduling a meeting with clients, evaluate if you really need to fly for a sit down or if seeing each other via Skype or chatting on an audio conference would suffice. There are surely times when in person meetings are called for, but minimizing flying is optimal.
It’s no secret that flying is resource intensive and produces sizeable emissions. According to Grist.org, a short commuter flight of about 300 miles on a commercial jet produces around 184 kilograms of CO2 per passenger. If you’re traveling further those kilograms add up. This is why The Nature Conservancy suggests telephone and videoconferencing as one of their top ten climate saving tips. Airplanes pump carbon emissions high into the atmosphere, producing twelve percent of transportation sector emissions.
An added bonus of teleconferencing is the time and money saved. Many work hours are lost getting to and from airports and flying, and airline tickets are pricey. Skyping takes no time at all to set up and is free.
If you must travel, consider alternate modes of transportation. Train travel is estimated to produce 90 percent fewer emissions than flying. For cars that figure drops to approximately 25 to 50 fewer emissions depending on the distance driven and type of car used.
