Sell a car and don't replace it

Why This is Green

While this may, at first, seem like an out there idea, it's actually quite smart. The average American household owns and regularly operates two or more cars. The numbers add up and up. Each one burns some kind of fuel, and emits harmful pollutants.

Choosing to sell one of your family’s two (or three!) cars without replacing it will improve the environment and save money. Of course it will not be taken off the road entirely. Someone else will buy and drive it. But how you choose to get around without that extra car will make an impact.

You may feel constrained at first with one less car, but with efficient planning, the eco-friendlier alternatives—public transportation, walking, biking, car and ride-sharing—work well. You won’t likely miss the second car payments, either.

How To

Determine the needs of your household in the most extreme situations—meaning what you need versus what you want. If you’re a family of 5, you might need a station wagon or a medium sized SUV. Once you know you own a car large enough for the needs of you and your family, you can go down to only owning that one car. The environmental and fiscal benefits soon follow.

If your family cannot fit in one car, look into selling both and upgrading to a larger, but still relatively fuel-efficient vehicle.

A shared chart of errands, school and office commutes, and more will help the transition.
