Sign up for a car-sharing program
Why This is Green
As people become more and more aware of the environmental impacts of our car culture, car-sharing programs are growing more and more popular.
For city dwellers, and increasingly for suburbanites, car-sharing programs work well. There’s no need to own a car to run an errand or haul a piece of furniture. You join a program, and take a car out when you need one for a few hours—a fuel-efficient or hybrid version if available.
Car sharers reduce congestion and harmful emissions. They also save money; the cost of car-sharing is nothing compared to owning and operating your own car(s).
Car sharers also tend to use four wheels as a last resort, relying on walking, biking, and public transportation instead—all far greener options.

How To
Look for a car-sharing program near you, and then join. Choosing between two? Ask them if they have green fleets (and ask them to back up this claim). Varied fleets are also helpful—small cars for local errands, bigger ones for trips to the beach.
If you travel a lot, you might want a program with a broad, multi-city network. Some programs only cover a specific locality.
Read the fine print. Some services don’t allow smokers or (shedding) pets.
It may take a little while to get used to (hint: it’s not easy to reserve a car on a holiday weekend!).
Can’t find a car-sharing program in your area? Ask! Demand often equals supply.
