Switch to natural diaper cream

Why This is Green

Most conventional creams and lotions can contain a number of synthetic chemicals that have been linked to everything from cancers to hormone disruption to birth defects to skin or eye irritation. Shockingly not even diaper cream is devoid of these questionable ingredients!

Because babies have thin skin, developing systems, and are generally more vulnerable than adults, being careful about what you slather on them is crucial. Cream formulations vary, but conventional versions tend to contain parabens, multiple petroleum-derived ingredients, and synthetic fragrance. The Environmental Working Group deems fragrance a high hazard due to its links to allergies, dermatitis, respiratory distress, and potential effects on the reproductive system.

Some classic conventional diaper creams may also contain BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) a preservative/stabilizer classified as reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen by the U.S. National Toxicology Program. Not exactly what you want on a cute bum.

Other ingredients of concern in conventional as well as natural diaper care include lavender oil, which may spur breast growth in boys, and unrefined nut oils—a problem if your child is allergic. Label reading is a must.

How To

If your current diaper cream doesn’t have natural or organic certification, look it up on the on EWG’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database or the GoodGuide. If it turns out to be too risky to wear, replace it with one that scores better and contains natural, organic, or biodynamic ingredients like calendula. Zinc oxide is also effective.
