Switch to a natural deodorant

Why This is Green

This can be a touchy subject. No one will switch to something that leaves you stinky! And yet, like most conventional cosmetics, deodorants can contain a number of synthetic chemicals that have been linked to everything from cancers to hormone disruption to skin or eye irritation. Additionally, antiperspirants contain aluminum to prevent perspiration. Not only is aluminum mining resource-intensive and polluting, but also it has been linked over the years to both Alzheimer’s disease and breast cancer. Though these links are at the moment scientifically unsubstantiated, fear about aluminum persists.

People who opt to exercise precaution where there is unknown can wear deodorant to avoid aluminum; it doesn’t contain any. However, conventional deodorant can contain petroleum derived ingredients and nasty chemicals like the antibacterial agent triclosan. Formulas vary brand to brand and tend to include synthetic fragrance. The Environmental Working Group deems fragrance a high hazard due to its links to allergies, dermatitis, respiratory distress, and potential effects on the reproductive system. Natural deodorants, preferably ones containing organic or biodynamic ingredients, are a safer bet.

How To

Bypass the antiperspirants and shop for natural deodorants. Look them up on the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep Cosmetics Database or the GoodGuide. If you can’t find them in your local store, check natural product stores or online.

Some say it takes your body time to get used to a natural deodorant if you’ve been using antiperspirant. You may need to try a few brands before finding one that’s effective for you.
