Turn thermostat down by 4 degrees in cold weather
Why This is Green
Turning down your thermostat is one of the simplest and most effective actions you can take to protect the environment and reduce your energy bills. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, you can save energy in the winter by setting your thermostat to 68°F while you're awake and setting it lower overnight or while you’re away from home. By dialing your thermostat down 10° to 15° for 8 hours, you can save about 5 to 15 percent a year on your heating bill. Keep in mind that these percentages will be greater in milder climates and less where it’s truly freezing.
So the question becomes: how low can you go. Try for four degrees. More? Go for it. Not only do you save energy, but also you reduce the release of greenhouse gases and you save non-renewable resources.

How To
In most systems, turning your thermostat down should be pretty straightforward. The hard part is ensuring everyone in your home keeps it low (children, visiting relatives, cold spouses)! As incentive, stock up on sweaters, warm socks, slippers, and cozy blankets for any couches.
If you recently purchased a programmable thermostat, consult the owner’s guide for help manually adjusting the programmed setting.
