Upgrade older faucets and shower heads older (pre 1994)

Why This is Green

Looking for ways to save water? Check out your faucets and shower heads. If they’re from before 1994 they’re likely a huge drain on your water bill.

Older faucets can use more than 4 gallons per minute of water versus the current standard low-flow rate of 1.5 or fewer gallons per minute! Replacing your old faucets as well as shower heads will reduce the amount of water you use immediately. This will translate to dollars saved on your water and heating bills; your water heater won’t have to heat as much water.

Reducing the amount of water you use also helps maintain a natural water balance. Even if you don’t have water restrictions where you live, preserving it is a good idea. At least 36 states expect water shortages in the next five years.

How To

Upgrading your old faucets and shower heads can be an easy or a difficult undertaking, depending on your home. If you’re concerned about doing it yourself, hire a qualified plumber.

In an effort to maximize your water savings, keep an eye out for the WaterSense label or for faucets labeled as low-flow as you shop for new fixtures.
