Volunteer at an environmental nonprofit organization
Why This is Green
Environmental nonprofits help protect our shared air and water, fight to have toxic chemicals banned (or at least removed from our kids’ toys), and they help us figure out the best ways to go green. Our relationships with these organizations can be very one-sided. To give back, you can always donate money, but if you’re particularly good at something an environmental nonprofit might benefit from, why not volunteer your time.
Depending on how many hours you feel comfortable donating, you might offer yourself as an advisor or a board member, or just get involved for a specific short-term project like organizing a fundraising event or helping with a website redesign. There tends to be no end of things a nonprofit organization needs to get done, so they’ll likely be delighted to put you to work.

How To
If you don’t already have a favorite eco nonprofit you’d like to donate your time and skills to, look for a good match. Consider where your strengths lie and what aspect of the environmental sector specifically interests you: health, energy, water, research, and more.
Get involved. Cold calling a nonprofit might work, but it might not. Try going to a community event hosted by the group that interests you and talking to the people who work there about joining their cause. There’s nothing like speaking face to face.
Be realistic about your availability and skill set. It doesn’t help anyone if you commit to a schedule or project you won’t be able to handle.
