It's getting easier to find local produce at your grocery store, particularly if you have access to a natural foods market. Many now include signs and labels that announce whether a food is locally grown or not and where it is grown. (FYI, there is no standard distance for local. We use the "one day drive" theory which is ~400 miles).
By selecting locally grown produce, you are reducing the transportation-related impact of that food choice. (This does not necessarily mean the OVERALL environmental impact is better, particularly if the food is produced off-season in greenhouses).
The other benefit is that locally grown food is likely to taste better because it is harvested and shipped closer to peak ripeness, and the nutrient content is also likely to be higher.
On your next trip to the grocery store, peruse what's available that is local vs. what is brought in from long distances.
Either select a few things on this trip to try or, equipped with what's available that is locally grown, plan a few meals around those options for the next week and come back.
