Many fruits retain pesticides that may negatively impact human health. By selecting organic options, you can avoid exposure to those pesticides. In addition, organic farming methods reduce chemicals in the air, land, and water in the environment. In some cases, organic food-production methods have a positive impact on the planet, especially when combined with composting and other eco-friendly food-production efforts.
The main factor to consider is where the organic fruit came from. If the product was flown in over a long distance, then the transportation impact of that fruit is likely to be big. Ideally you can find both local AND organic, but if that fails, you may have to make a trade-off based on what's most important to you.
Choose to buy organic fruit only for this week’s groceries, and you’ll find this to be a much more manageable action than going completely organic for all your food items, 365 days a year.
If you don't normally buy organic, try this action in the seasons when fresh and local choices are likely to be greatest. If cost is a big concern, try visiting farmers markets or food co-ops.
