Dental floss may seem insignificant, but the amount sold in the United States alone actually has a not insubstantial impact on the environment. It can also negatively impact our health even as it helps our gums and teeth.
Most floss is made of nylon, a synthetic material derived from petroleum. The extraction and production of this non-renewable resource has negative effects on our soil, water, and ecosystems.
In order to make floss glide between teeth, it’s usually coated with a controversial substance called polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE). The EPA says that PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid), a chemical employed in the manufacture of PTFE, is likely to be carcinogenic to humans. It has been found at low levels in the blood of most Americans, remains in our bodies for years, and has been linked to other health issues involving the liver, the immune system, as well as developmental and reproductive organs. This is the same stuff found in non-stick cookware. Not exactly what you want near your gums!
Check your current dental floss on the on the Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep Cosmetics Database or the GoodGuide. If it scores poorly, replace it with one that scores better.
The best choices are flosses are made of silk, a natural fiber with minimal eco-impacts. Seek out a natural beeswax or plant-based coating, or simply choose an unwaxed product.
As for packaging, less is always more. Choose cardboard cases that you can easily recycle. If plastic is the only option, make sure your municipality recycles it.
Desert Essence says their floss is naturally waxed with pure, naturally antiseptic tea tree oil and contains no alcohol, artificial detergents, color or synthetic perfumes.
Rated highly by EWG's Skin Deep database, this floss is prepared with natural waxes, so it glides smoothly on your teeth and gums. According to Tom's of Maine, it's made from strong nylon filaments woven together to prevent snapping or fraying.
